GSF Annual Concert: Glade City Rounders

Hailing from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the Glade City Rounders formed out of a love of old recordings of traditional southern string band, blues, and jug band music. While their music is strongly influenced by musicians from the state of Tennessee and the Tennessee River Valley region, their musical influences stretch from Memphis to Bristol and from Louisville to the Mississippi River Delta.  Each member contributes their own element to create a live show that is truly unique.

William "Tennessee Bill" See was raised in the Middle Tennessee old-time music tradition. He is an award winning traditional fiddler and banjo player.

Josh Smith is an old-time roots musician whose specialities include flatpick guitar, clawhammer banjo, and "jugging." He has studied and performed with some of the regions' most well-known old-time musicians.  His jugging is considered second to none.

Richard "Squirrel" McLain is one of the most skilled and unique performers in the modern day old-time scene. His award winning archaic, almost lost, style of banjo playing is known as the upstroke. His vaudevillian style of singing is eerily reminiscent of Uncle Dave Macon, Stringbean, or Grandpa Jones.

Together, the trio forms a sound that is original, yet familiar. When this band takes off on a tune, you can bet there will not be a still foot in the audience.

Cumberland Dance Week NaCoMe Center

Cumberland Dance Week is the all-inclusive folk dance and music camp of the South. We are known for our live musicians playing rousing old time tunes, exuberant traditional dancing, and top-notch classes.  All this in an unforgettable natural environment, with running creeks and fresh air in the deciduous forest of Middle Tennessee. Cumberland is an all-ages camp ideal for family groups which includes programming for ages 2 to 102.

Jake Leg Stompers Concert and the Bill Steber Photo Exhibit

Centerville native and professional photographer and musician, Bill Steber, is exhibiting his 25-year long photographic project celebrating the Blues at the Hickman County Public Library in Centerville.  This exceptional exhibit, "Stones in My Pathway," is free to the public during library hours from April 7th through May 31st.  A reception to meet the artist has been planned for May 5th at 5:00 p.m. at the Public Library in Centerville.  This exhibit displays talent combined with passion from one of Hickman County's inspiring citizens.  

The Blues exhibit is in conjunction with a concert by Steber's band, the Jake Leg Stompers.  The Hickman Heritage Music Fest concert is sponsored by the Hickman County Public Library and is slated for Saturday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m.  The concert features prewar jug band music, which will be presented at Mrs. Mable's Back Porch at the Hickman County Fairgrounds.

Concert Tickets: $15 for adults, $8 for school age children. Group rates are available.

Jazz Is Here! Concert Series

Daniel Bey, founder and leader of the Jazz Is Here! Concerts, and Marty Crum, Guitarist/Banjoist and performer, will team up for a six concert series beginning September 9, 2016 and ending May 19, 2017. The concert series will showcase the talents of seasoned professionals who have made it their life’s passion and occupation to play music. Credits for Daniel Bey and Marty Crum span 40 years on stages across the nation.

Christmas Time's a-Comin' Arts and Crafts Fair

It is time once again for the Hickman County Arts & Crafts Guild's Christmas Time's a-Comin' Arts and Crafts Fair! Local artisans from Hickman County, as well as from surrounding counties, will be displaying their wares at the East Hickman Elementary School. Saturday, November 19, 2016, is the day to mark your calendars! From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., you will be able to find handmade crafts of all kinds. Woodworking, jewelry, sewing, wall hangings, Christmas ornaments, and crocheting. There will be jams & jellies and homemade bread. Don't forget to check out what the artists have been doing. One of a kind watercolor paintings, art work in oils, pen & ink, and much, much more! Autumn in the Country Arts & Crafts Show

The 2017 Autumn in the Country Arts and Crafts Fair is presented by the Hickman County Arts and Crafts Guild on the first Saturday of October.  This year the Arts and Crafts Fair will be held on Saturday, October 1st from 9 am - 4 pm.  It will be held in the Centerville Courthouse and on the Centerville Courthouse Lawn.  This event features hand-made &/or hand-crafted items only - made by local artisans as well as those in surrounding counties.  For additional information, contact Janet - jp.creatives@yahoo.com.

Harvest Market at the Winery

The Annual Harvest Market will be held on September 17th, 2016 from 10am-5pm, at 2119 Highway 50 West Loop, Centerville, TN 37033.  At the Market you can find locally grown produce from some of our favorite farms, handmade crafts and artwork from some of our favorite local artisans as well as delicious food and of course award winning wines from Grinder's Switch Winery!

This year's festival will also include our first St. Thomas Grape Stomp which will help us raise money for our local hospital, St. Thomas Hickman. Participants (teams and individuals) will help us stomp our grapes to make the next vintage of our Marathon wine, which benefits St. Thomas Hickman with every bottle sold. Prizes will be awarded and fun is sure to be had by all!

Arts & Ag Tour

The Hickman County Arts & Ag Tour is a FREE two day self-guided tour of farms on the back roads of Hickman County Tennessee and takes place annually on Memorial Day weekend (Friday & Saturday). Natural and historic landmarks, community centers and other points of interest are also highlighted. Each destination on the map features an agricultural element combined with local artists including crafters, writers, musicians etc. Activities include farm tours, demonstrations, arts, crafts, food, music, and more.

Tennessee Fiddle Ensemble

Jim Wood : Director

Where does music come from? Why does it spring up, even in the most rural and isolated regions, from people armed with only a great desire to perfect music that is remembered forever? Jim Wood knows.  He has spent a lifetime studying the answers to these questions. This fiddler cut his teeth on the old-time music of his hometown of Fairview, Tennessee where his father, championship guitarist Jimmy Wood, was heavily involved in the local grassroots musical scene.  He has learned his style from the great performers from Hickman County, among them Ernest Ferguson, Howdy Forrester, Clebert Warren and more. He also tells of Billy Brewer, a fiddler from Lyles, who worked extensively with Music City Bluegrass from the early 70s through the 80s.  They were the most successful band on the fiddlers’ convention circuit for two solid decades. Jim not only listened and learned from these old timers, he keeps it going on.  When you visit with Jim, you hear the voice of countless musicians, their passion for music, the history of the styles native and unique to this region, and you see in him the continuation of all this.

Jim currently directs the TN Fiddle Ensemble bringing together the talent of John Boulware, Inge Wood, and Ben Ayers, also famed for their talent and skill. Amongst them they hold over 35 championships and medals in their art.

Legends: A Tribute to Hank & Elvis

Jason Petty Band

Music magically transports us to the times when life was so romantic…and those times were the golden years of music by Hank Williams and then Elvis Presley.

In “Legends: Hank and Elvis”, Petty will follow the significant similarities between the two icons. Here is how Jason describes them: “I have a deep interest in these two very gifted men, both Southerners were born into poverty and were essentially loners.  Both had very strong mothers who helped guide their early lives and to whom both were devoted. These mothers also were firmly rooted in religion and raised their boys around gospel music.  Both learned their musical craft at the feet of poor, black blues musicians and singers. Hank and Elvis rocketed to stardom, thus affecting their entire lives.  Both changed music forever.”

 Jason Petty, the writer, director and performer of this and several other national renowned musical shows, has roots deep in Hickman County. He spent his summers with his grandmother and father in Primm Springs, TN and says he learned his love of music singing Gospel with his grandma.  His admiration of Hank Williams and Elvis Presley came by listening to the radio with his dad. Jason still has family members in our area. Greatly inspired he has dedicated his professional life to paying tribute to these historic artists. More than a musical review, this is storytelling at its best.

 This concert was performed at East Hickman HS Auditorium on April 4, 2015 to an audience of over 350.

Musical Trails Web Site

The Hickman County Library is proud to announce the launching of the Musical Trails web site, which recounts the role Music has had in Hickman County. This site is an experience in video, photography and audio that form a collection of memories from folk who made music their lives.  Resembling a scrapbook of an old time musician, the site takes you through the beginnings of Hickman County music and the paths it has taken over time.

Stories are told of Paul Warren, Howdy Forrester, Ernest Ferguson, Charlie Garner, Emory Martin and many others who followed their path to the Grand Ole Opry. Minnie Pearl is a story of laughter as music. Beth Slater Whitson, who changed the nature of music with her lyrics at the turn of the century, has an outstanding tale of perseverance told here.   

The site was made possible through funding from the TN Arts Commission contributing grants that sustained the artist fees over the five years of the project.  Additional one-time funders include Buffalo-Duck River RC&D, the TN Department of Tourism, and Grinders Switch Foundation.

Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes

 Grinder’s Switch Foundation Concert Series is proud to present acclaimed artist, Jason Petty in his award winning show, “Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes”, for one night only on November 9, 2013 at East Hickman High School Auditorium, in Lyles, TN at 7pm.  It is fitting that Jason Petty is featured in this Concert Series because Hickman County can claim him as one of our own. He spent his summers with his grandmother and father in Primm Springs, TN and says he learned his love of music singing Gospel with his grandma and his admiration of Hank Williams by listening to the radio with his dad.  Jason still has family members in our area.

 Jason Petty wrote the show, “Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes” which pays tribute to Hank Williams and gives us an unforgettable look at his influence on such artists as Jimmy Rodgers, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubbs, George Jones and ... Elvis!  The show gives us an insightful, honest and respectful look at Country Music history and vividly takes us back to memory lane.

Hickman County can also lay claim to Mark Thomas Baczynski, the Fiddlist who accompanies Jason along with two other amazing musicians.  Mark lives in the county in the Duck River area with his family.  Mark’s musical abilities make him much sought after.  His solos have been called “breathtaking” and having “showboating sizzle”.

 Attending Jason Petty’s “Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes” is like being at a big party with wonderful musical guests.  You will laugh, shed a tear, definitely tap your feet and sing along!

Halloween Haunts

Annually the Hickman County Chamber of Commerce hosts one of the only Halloween parades in the state of Tennessee with over 35 floats every year. During that time over 2000 children and adults alike fill the Centerville Square to participate. The businesses on the Centerville Square also give candy to the ghosts and goblins that roam the square.

This year Grinders Switch Foundation will add to the hauntings with Spider! a walk through the dark dwelling of arachnid world. With performances, set design and technical prowess of Clay Harris this event will surely take your breath away and tingle your Halloween sense. Unforgettable! Spider! will run October 17-31, 2013 at Molly’s Place the basement space below the old Opera House store that was built in 1902…come see…if you dare…
